  • First off... awesome! And then there's this:"The exciting thing here is the ability to have remote control over the body." I'm all for augmentation and therapies, but that's a creepy ass statement. Also, say you've got diabetes and use this. Now you're all happy with a good insulin level... until the guy standing next to…
  • @drjaazI've been thinking about it tonight and I'm going to go ahead and prep and implant another one of these in a different finger. If all goes well, I'll be removing the first one since the placement is pretty annoying at times (specifically while hunting with a pump action). Hopefully the new location will alleviate…
  • It is 4mm long. I want to say 4x1, but it feels wider than that when I roll another finger over it. Might just be the coating making it feel that way. The one nice thing about the extra bits on the ends is that it makes it really easy to place a deep stitch against the little "tab" to hold it in place while it heals a bit.
  • Quick, cheap, and easy? Barometric pressure:http://www.adafruit.com/products/1893 Controller and infrasound (coupled with an appropriate transducer):http://www.adafruit.com/products/1625 Use any haptics, an rgb led in the frame of a pair of sunglasses, etc. for output. A pretty short session writing up the Arduino sketch…
  • It hasn't been very long... a month or so. So far, so good. My only regret is not getting the cylinder farther back along the side of the finger. As it is, it is up toward the pad enough that it gets some mechanical stress from certain activities. Live and learn, I guess. Talk to me in a year, and we'll see how bioproof it…
  • @CassoxThe fumes can be irritating, but even without ventilation on I've never been bothered much working around them (formaldehyde is far worse). We get a premixed solution that also contains methanol and god knows what else. There's a tray with a lid that I keep the trocar in full of the stuff, and another for soaking…
  • Unfortunately, because the people we're working with are already deceased there really aren't safety procedures for the patient. As for me, I'm gloved up and... well not much else. Most embalmers (in my experience, and myself included) are primarily concerned with biohazards and direct chemical exposure. If we inhale a ton…
  • @Cassox - Yes, we use glutaraldhyde but mostly just to clean equipment and in specialized embalming fluids to keep jaundice cases from going green during embalming (it isn't totally successful).
  • I used polyolefin/nylon shrink tubing over a cylindrical magnet and have had no issues. I can't really speak on how it holds up in the long run as it has only been a bit over a month.
  • @rodya2501 Projection would just be to be able to see it in the display... like the old vaudevillian ghost trick (I don't remember the name of it offhand) or a red dot sight. You project it onto the glasses such that the reflection of the projection (say that 5 times fast) is visible to you. As far as tracking distance,…
  • @rodya2501 I haven't seen anyone do it but you could use the same idea as a laser projection keyboard. Project it onto a partially silvered mirror in the fov and track hand motion. If you wanted to use a surface you'd also need to know how far away the surface is (fairly trivial), but why not eliminate the surface entirely…
  • Build a man a fire and you keep him warm for a night. Set a man on fire and you keep him warm for life! All kidding aside... One of the huge things we worry very little about is diarrhea. We get a bit of a bug and there's loperamide and IV saline to keep us alive. Other places, not so much. You drink the only water…
  • Quick update - maybe interesting, maybe not. Two things, although I don't suggest anyone try either... First thing... most of the feeling has returned to the finger I tried the Phenol local on. I do have something like a callus where I injected, and associated diminished sensation, but I can feel it again and I'm fairly…
  • It's a proof of concept for a cheaper than surplus device. Ars artis gratia. That being said, if @dokclaw has any suggestions as to what cell types to start with and what is feasible in a longer view, I am all ears.
  • As far as the suit goes, there are all kinds of skin tight bodysuits on the market - most of them are things like spandex, latex, etc. If a material has a bit of stretch to it and you can tailor it to the wearer, you can make them out of all sorts of stuff. With your Zentai suit (or whatever) in hand, start looking at…
  • Kinetic watch tech is an interesting idea. They've been making kinetic watches for years (my father wore one when I was a kid). It isn't difficult, could be easily encapsulated, and is small enough to implant in any of a number of places. The only thing is that they tend to have a small vibration associated with them. I'm…
  • @Shaedlaer makes a good point about nerve regeneration taking time. My intent, however, was simply to share my experience to warn other people who might attempt this route. Since we experiment on ourselves, we are bound to fail and possibly suffer long term consequences as a result of that failure. I figure we should warn…
  • Non-coding DNA wouldn't necessarily be weeded out. Think of it like a subsumption architecture. A competency may change over time to become more fit, or some other competency may be more fit at the time and suppress the old one. The old competency, although not active, still remains. Once in a while, randomly, the old…
  • DO NOT use phenol based locals hypodermically. They really should only be used topically. I tested really low concentrations on the back of my forearm with promising results. The same concentration in my non-dominant index finger seems to have done some lasting damage - I now have a small area on the side of that finger…
  • I have a pretty broad skill set, but I tend to gain proficiency but never really master these things. That being said, I hold a degree in Mortuary Science and that leads to the one thing I've really mastered - embalming and restorative art/demisurgery. This actually provides a number of useful skills:* Gross Anatomy *…
  • No, it doesn't appear to be anything but an insect virus. One interesting thing in relation to humans, however. "The polyDNAvirus associated with Cotesia rubecula, code for a protein CrV1 that denatures actin filaments..." As far as the insect goes, this was selected for to prevent encapsulation of the implanted egg. If I…
  • Typically pacemakers, drug pumps, VNS implants, etc. are only removed prior to cremation. They are simply left in the body for burials. The specific regulations as to disposal vary from state to state, but the funeral home I worked for donated all implants to a vet. They typically sterilize them and use them in dogs. You…
  • Alright! Better data on electrical characteristics. For mammalian cells, 4mm gap @ 6.25kV/cm... That's 2.5kV - easily achievable. As far as current goes - most earlier models used 400mA, but recent studies show greater cell viability and highly effective transfection at 125 µA. Again, this is easily done. I am also finding…
  • Hmmm... let me know how the reverse engineering goes. If you need any assistance with the new version, that sort of thing is my cup of tea. Maybe I'll just wait up for that to come to fruition, and buy one off you if you get it going. Thank you for getting back to me on that.
  • This is awesome, but if you're only looking for fingerprints you can use the photogravure method. Down and dirty explanation is that you lift the prints to be duplicated, use the photographic/etching process known as photogravure to etch the prints onto a copper plate, and then apply latex, gelatin, or whatever material to…
  • I realize that this is an old discussion, but I'm trying this anyway. The first iteration is going to be simplified and generalized quite a bit as a proof of concept. Later generations can be more tuneable for specific cell types. Here's what I'm thinking... AtTiny85 or AtMega328P to control the pulses (I use an Arduino as…
  • You are literally three or four blocks from me! I'll PM you with my e-mail address, and we'll figure out a time to meet up for coffee or something.
  • Hey, I'm just getting ready to make an intro post myself... I'm in the Springs!! Up near Union and Dublin. I also design tabletop games... Cards, mostly. Hit me up, I'd love to have some time to chat with someone else in the community. By the way, how did the magnet implant go?
