Soluable glass

Looking through ceramics today i stumbled over soluable glass. Anyone got any information if that stuff could be used to coat implants?

  • 10 bucks says it's sodium silicate. Technically biocompatible, but not good for coating implants. On contact with bodily fluids the silica gets replaces by calcium and phosphate forming hydroxyapatite. It'll cause the coating to crack and be useless. Also it's fairly porous so it won't really coat the thing properly to keep it inert. It can be used as a component in coatings though.
  • there are also potassium and lithium silicate variants of that. any chance they have different properties?
