I happened across this. It seems like it would fit your exo cortex @garethnelsonuk. I tried to find the link to the actual paper but wasn't able to. It's pretty interesting and probably far out of the reach of a "backyard" bio hacker seeing how it involves the brain and cutting to it. Just thought it was a cool bit

I'm familiar with this work, it's exciting but it's still old news and has been ongoing for a few years now.

Definitely way beyond the capabilities of any of us here.
