Lifting magnet and sensing magnet?

Ignoring costs and stuff, it seems like you'd be getting the best of both worlds if the magnets were far enough away on one hand, for example more of a sensing magnet in a fingertip, and a lifting "magicians" magnet in the side of your hand for instance. Would this be practical?

    yes! you can put much larger magnets in the side of the hand (or your forearm) for lifting. lots of people have magnets in these exact places for these exact reasons.
