Inquiring About Directional sensing

Would it be possible to add a permanent sense of direction via a haptic wearable with a compass and accelerometer? It seems like a pretty basic foray into adding additional senses that might be doable with our resources. Perhaps a circle of small rotors with the one vibrating changing depending on your orientation? The main issue is that most haptic feedback devices I'm aware of are a little bulky. Is there anything smaller? I don't have a whole lot of technical expertise, so please let me know if I'm vastly underestimating how difficult this might be.

This is inspired by recent breakthroughs in sensory replacement and the earlier thread about implantable compasses.
